Hi there! I am Beckee, the goofball behind Beckee's Deals, and here are a couple things you way not know about me. Back in my pre-children days, I was first an actress (local theatre-nothing fancy) and then I got a degree in Theatre Education and I was a drama teacher (in many areas-summer camps, elementary schools, but mostly in high school). Being "trained" in theatre is a double edged sword because it makes me a sucker for some good entertainment, and it also makes me super picky. I have to admit that overall, most of the current programing on TV right now for kids is totally unwatchable to me. I put on a show for the kids and can hardly stand to hear it as I work. When I am going to watch a show with them, I seek out my old go to shows-Sesame Street and Mr Rogers Neighborhood being my faves!

So, when I was told about the new show coming to NET (Nebraska's PBS Station) I could not wait to tell you about it! The new show is called Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood. That is all I needed to hear to pique my interest because any good lifelong Mr Rogers fan like myself should instantly recognize the name of Daniel Tiger! Let me tell you a bit about the show (as provided to me):

Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, is a new, vibrant animated series designed for preschoolers ages 2-4 airing on NET-1 and NET-HD starting Monday, September 3rd.

·        Series Description: Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood is based on the legacy of Fred Rogers (Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood) and features the children of his original, beloved Neighborhood of Make-Believe characters. In Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, 4-year-old Daniel Tiger talks directly to young audience members, inviting them into his colorful world. He is joined by his friends O the Owl, Katerina Kittycat, Prince Wednesday and Miss Elaina. Together, through imagination, creativity and music they learn the key social skills necessary for school and life!

·        Show Legacy: Fred Rogers influenced generations of children for more than 40 years with his high standards for early childhood education and creativity, as well as his love and respect for the children who grew up watching him. Seriously, I am a fan of Mr Rogers! That man was amazing, so I am excited about this show, but I am not going to lie, I always thought Daniel Tiger was a tad bit whiny for my taste. Well, I think they solved that problem in the series. Check out this short clip of what you can expect:

I got the chance to review a great new online game geared to kids ages 6-12 called Time Island. Before I tell you about it and what we thought, I have to tell you that the real joy of this is that the actual game is FREE and that is awesome! What is it?

What did we think?

Like I mentioned, this is geared toward 6-12 year old kids, but we are all having fun wiht this game...dare I admit that I have been playing it occasionally when the kids are in bed?! AND my 5-year-old loves it as well as my 7 and 8 year old. Here is what they had to say:

Salsa (8 yr old girl): "I think Time Island is super fun! I can't think of a favorite part because I love the whole thing, the shops, the outdoor games, and the Goggs-everything!!"

E-Dawg (7 yr old boy): "It was a creative game for kids to have to find food and stuff to survive and the games trying to chase the Goggs away were awesome!!"

Sugar Pup (5 yr old boy): "It was great and I hope my brother and sister stop hogging turns so I can play more."

Are you, like me, always looking for great learning/teaching resources for your kids? I know this may not be typical, but my kids LOVE to learn and come home from school asking for more stuff to learn. We look for good learning resources on line, we print worksheets, we play online learning games, and we do a lot of reading at this house (none of which is assigned homework). Well, I just read about a great site in a review on Susan Heim on Parenting and had to share it with you!

The review is of the FREE website called Mission US. It is a FREE online role-plating game about American history. I went and checked it out and it looks awesome! I cannot wait for the kids to get home so I can let them check it out! My kids are excellent readers and writers and do quite well in math, but they have not learned much history or science yet, so this will be perfect!! Anyone know great science resources?!

Well, the other summer reading program we love to participate in each summer is for kids of any age and is run through the Omaha Public Library. This looks really awesome! There is a program this summer where Kids can bowl free! In fact for a small fee Families can all bowl free (you basically have to pay for the summer pass for the adults, or just have the kids bowl free). Last time they had a deal like this there was no participating locations in Nebraska, but now there are a lot! In fact there are a lot all over! Boy, if you live near an IKEA, you are super lucky-I think they must just like giving away free food!

How exciting-my kids will LOVE this! For Borders reading program you have to read 10 books to get 1 free-they double dog dare you to do it! Go read all about it and download the form here.

One of my tips and tricks to successful grocery shopping with kids is that almost every store bakery gives kids free cookies. So, my kids know that if they behave, they get a cookie at the end! Well, I think when they find out about this, they will never be satisfied with cookies again!

Super Saver in Millard (144th and Stony Brook) will have FREE Ice Cream Cones for Kids Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from noon-6 pm. And for the mommas, the Pantene Hair Studio will be at Super Saver on Saturday May 1 from 11am-3pm.

Every summer since 1991 Regal Movie Theatres has offered FREE kids movie festivals. This summer will be no exception!

During the festival selected G or PG movies start at 10:00am every Tuesday and Wednesday. Tickets and seating are first-come, first-served and are limited to theatre capacity. Click here for all the details and to find a theatre near you.

Sadly there are no theatres in Nebraska, but when we lived in Washington this was a favorite family activity!!
